In a month where there has been many outstanding Test matches, I felt torn between picking a player who had one incredible stand out performance or a young cricketer who made an impressive debut. Both would have been worthy winners but the more I thought over Azhar Ali's record breaking 302 not out the less the pitch, the opposition and his other (slightly more mooted) performances mattered.
Ali is not the most technically gifted batsman you will ever see and many will say that his high score this month is an outlier compared to his most recent run of form - however the concentration that he would have had to exert in the blistering Dubai heat is a near Herculean effort.
In his four innings from completed games in October he has totalled 383 runs, averaging 95.75.
