I picked the best five remaining pace bowlers from stats. The best five remaining spin bowlers from stats, then added five who attracted votes in the previous bowler polls, or were mentioned in discussion for their absence.

Team so far.
Hobbs
Sutcliffe
Bradman
Border
S.Waugh
Botham/Miller
Gilchrist
Warne
Lillee
See above
McGrath

I'm tempted to go for Barnes, but Laker is a stronger figure in Ashes mythology, so he gets my vote.

Went for fiery Fred. Tempted by Barnes, but don't really know too much about him, apart from his figures.

Botham is in, so three seamers and a spinner already in the team.

Interesting that the bowlers (so far) are all of the modern (as in we have seen them) era, but a good percentage of batsmen are not.

More than a coincidence, I think.

I went for Alderman. Besides having a fantastic record until his shoulder injury, and just loving English conditions, we need some variety in the attack.

Not seen any of them play in their prime, so decline to comment

Probably put Stuart Clark in from the modern era.... Id love to have seen him stick around in test cricket longer then he did, in a short term was as good as any paceman I have seen

Stats-wise, Rodney Hogg is a must. But I raised the minimum wickets to leave him out.

Alderman was sort of the Clark of days past. I think he still holds the record for wickets in an Ashes series. Possibly holds second place too.

Laker has the best series haul. Alderman is first and third for the Aussies.

Bedser has a couple of good series there, but ordinary overall.

Nice to see Harold's Bodyline series up there.

Went for Trueman. I think you need two out and out fast bowlers , for all the skills of McGrath and Botham.

However : I question the basic premise of just selecting XI . Surely any Test team will normally name twelve , and settle the bowling after looking at the pitch ?

I think we should be picking another bowler ( obviously an off spinner , with this team selection ) as an alternative , for spinning conditions.
