Matty Potts

in a county cricket season where they've been playing on roads with balls that go soft in 5 mins, he's spent April and May taking 5fers, 6fers and 7fers and most importantly staying fit while doing it. If he doesn't earn a debut test call up tomorrow it will be the silliest decision England will have made since they rested their best ever bowler before a test series in case he got tired later :stupid

With all due respect to Ben Compton, worthy cricketer though he is, he's plundered runs on pitches where scores of 500 plays 500 is more common than usual

although Kent have been unduly reliant on his runs when trying to turn defeats into draws, which is a feature that England might call upon at some stage

Fair point.

With Potts, I took the month award to be for performances this month, and I noted he's only played twice in May. Then I checked the stats - 6-fer in the first match, 7 and 4 in the second. No wonder he got the England call up. Best of luck to him.

So we're now down to 17 wickets in 2 matches against Worcestershire and Glamorgan or 344 runs in 3 innings against Bangladesh.

aye, he's done really well. since the season started he's taken 35 wickets at 18's on flat pitches and with rubbish balls. He got lucky, in that a whole raft of England back up seamers are out injured, but the difference in his bowling this year compared to the last couple is very noticeable, so he might have pushed through ahead of them all anyway. Having a new capt, new coach, new exec all contribute to him getting the nod this early, I think. In previous years they'd have probably waited until he was completely out of form before selecting him, then discarded him after

It seems counter-intuitive to award Cricketer of the Month to a player whose team were whitewashed but I really think that Daryl Mitchell’s series was better than any of England’s players. To go from a player who was outside the starting XI when he board the plane to being the first batter to score three centuries in a three test series since Sir Don Bradman is some accolade.

Other stats which he can hang his hat on are the fact that he and Tom Blundell faced the second most balls of any partnership since data was collected and only three New Zealnders have scored more than his 538 runs in this series.

It has been a packed month though and Bairtsow and Root, any other month, could have got my vote….with Jason Roy and Cameron Green with an outside chance too.

Mitchell is a good shout, but I think I'd have to give it to YJB. Stunning stuff really.

But if it went to Mitchell, I could live with that

It's Mitchell for me. Without him I don't think there would be a series worth the name.

YJB. Just astonishing.

Mitchell was good, but blotted his copybook in my eyes by needing several let offs to score the runs, and bad slip catching.

Mitchell is the only player ever to score 3 tons away in a 3 match series.... Jonny played an innings that will forever live in the memory as the most audacious one I've possibly ever seen.

I've got to give it to Jonny. That 2nd test hundred is something I'll tell my bored grandkids about....
