That's a remarkable development. Darren Lehmann? What can he do?

Steve Smith called up, I suppose as cover for Clarke. Which I guess underlines how bad things are.

The quote from Miller is definitive. Compton is out. Seems a premature judgement to me.

I wonder if Rankin is there for the Australia tour, and is an indication England are concerned about Tremlett.

Woakes is out of the picture, which is a shame.

No Ravi is a surprise!

Compton must be feeling aggrieved. He has just had a bad series but scored two tons in NZ. He, IMO, deserved one more test at least. He may get it of course.

This means that England's search for a number six goes on. If Bairstow doesn't do well (maybe no better than Compton who has two tons) it isn't reasonable to expect Root to slip back to six and allow Compton back in as opener. So if Bairstow doesn't take this chance, and his batting has been mixed, with many flaws manifest, we again need a number six. Root wasn't the solution after all.

And those in the press who were calilng for Compo to be dropped won't feel guilty exactly. But maybe a little awkward.

Am I the only one thinking opening with Root is just an experiment and that Compton can still come back in the England squad?

If a current England player is to be dropped in test squad it should be Ian Bell.

An awful lot has been said about the slow batting of our top 3 in ODI games it seems to me that Compton's S/R in tests has been snails pace. Maybe they not only see Root as a better long term bet but giving a better balance with Cook and Trott.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

Won't Ravi be playing for Essex anyway? Still has a chance to make an impression.
