So this starts tomorrow.

Hasn't rained for weeks, and the rain expected won't be until next week. Might be Bashir gets a long bowl.

This is the England side, with Cook making his debut. Only 27, seems to have been around a long time. Good that Tongue has recovered. I presume we can say Carse has been dropped.

Crawley, Duckett, Pope, Root, Brook, Stokes (capt), Smith (wk), Atkinson, Tongue, Cook, Bashir.

Potts and Rew not included.

Overcast this morning. Should brighten up later.

Suddenly a lot of rain is forecast for the weekend.

Should think this is an average boosting exercise. Losing this test match would be a coach/captain resigning moment.

Well, could hardly be a better start for England. Who would also have bowled.

Looking at the 2003 Z tour of E, Z had four first class and 3x50 over tour games. I bet we complained this was too little.

Still 2-0 to England though.

Its a shame really, because Zimbabwe in 2000 were not a bad team. And then after that point they became gutted by the 2003 tour, with all their best players not present. Could have taken the 2nd test in 2000 if not for rain although they were brutally beaten first test. Murray Goodwin played an absolute blinder of an innings in that 2nd test. Zimbabwe skittled England 3rd innings, but rain made sure they didn't get a chance of completing a possible victory.

Goodwin only got 19 tests, which is a real shame. Life sometimes isnt fair.... I guess it was great for Sussex, but I'd rather Muzza was playing at the level he deserved.

I remember Zimbabwe being quite strong on the 2000 tour, though my memory is of the TB Test because I saw it live, rather than the other game. TB could have gone either way I think, given time.

Rare hundred partnership from the openers.

Stokes saying Bethel will play once back from IPL, so maybe Crawley and Pope playing for one place.

Apparantly 'clarification' has been issued and Stokes meant that Bethel would be back in the squad.

Hardly anyone in that England side has played much in the way of cricket this season, with the notable exception of Crawley, who has had loads, because he's been completely out of nick and Pope who's under pressure for his place

just as well that this is a turkey shoot rather than a combative encounter between two competitive sides

Tongue at least has had a couple of 5fers in preparation for this. Cook has been shoved in and out of the Essex side by England
