ICC Women's T20 World Cup Qualifier

Postby The Professor » Mon Sep 19, 2022 8:32 pm

The tussle to join the big girls in the T20 World Cup started yesterday. Bangladesh, Ireland, Scotland and the USA (in Group A) and Papua New Guinea, Thailand, UAE and Zimbabwe (in Group B) will play off against each other, with the two finalists making it to the main competition next year.

So far the front runners are Bangladesh and Zimbabwe who have both won their first two games. Despite this, the largest victory saw Ireland destroy America today. After America only managed 91 runs, despite batting their full allocation, Ireland then chased it down in 13.1 overs to do themselves no end of a favour in qualifying to the semi-finals where, you would imagine they would play Zimbabwe. Similarly, the highest scoring individual innings came from a team that haven’t been doing terribly well overall. Theertha Satish got 68 runs but was the only one who looked up for a fight as the UAE only managed 119 in pursuit of Papua New guinea’s 148. Bangladesh’s Nigar Sultana is the highest overall run-scorer with 67 against Ireland yesterday and 34 versus Scotland today. The standout bowling performer is also a Bangladeshi. Shohely Akhter scored the tournament’s only 4-fer today against Scotland – returning stunning figures of 4-7 from her 4 overs.

Tomorrow is a rest day before the final takes place on Sunday.
