Maybe they'll justify their method by the loss of two days. But really they would have been better off playing with more care if it made a good lead more likely.

No question a safer approach , if it led to a serious lead , would be a clearer path to victory. But in "Nighthawk" Broad's after play interview , he almost seemed to be saying "well , we like to chase - and it's more fun for the spectators this way !"

Roundheads and Cavaliers , I guess ?

England 158 all out

Jansen 5-35
Rabada 4-81

Jansen should never have been dropped for Harmer.

Couldn't have gone much worse for England this morning.

Going to be a two day Test. A series over in eight days. Not much future for Test cricket of this kind.

Might go over to tomorrow. I thought the extra half hour might be on but BBC says they'll finish at 18.30.

Only one 50 opening stand for England this summer, this is a second.

the game suddenly moved on apace while I was out

bad light and hardly any runs left to get might be the only way a spinner gets to bowl

light is fading but the lights are on. The batsmen have hit 5 boundaries in the last 3 overs against the quickest bowlers that SA can throw at them albeit some off the edge. Full house. Hardly any runs required. Planes to catch

umpires take the players off

Play ye not!

very cricket

if this was a T20 and it was drizzling as well, they'd have stayed on

If play looks dangerous, that's one thing, but I'm not getting the impression that this is the case here.

Commentators always get huffy in this situation as they lose a day off.

My view has always been that someone prefering not to play on another scheduled day is no reason to rip up the regulations.
