Defeat here, means England have won none (and arguably lost all) of their most recent five series. It also means they have won just one of their 17 most recent Tests. It leaves them rooted to the bottom of the World Test Championship table despite possessing riches and resources of which nearly all their rivals can but dream. It is a fitting legacy for Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive. For it has been on his watch that the first-class game has been compromised and devalued.

And they'll keep being beaten. They'll be beaten by New Zealand in June. They'll be beaten by India in July. They may well be beaten by South Africa in August and September, too. And does anyone, anywhere, expect them to win in Pakistan in December?

The worry here is that those running English cricket – and many of them are the architects of this calamity – will exploit the situation to bring in the changes they've always wanted: a cut to the number of first-class counties; a reduction in the County Championship schedule; an increasing emphasis on white-ball cricket played on pitches and with balls that don't deviate.

as always, it's hard to disagree with anything he says

Where does the ECB get the most of its revenue from? Would it be 25 days of test cricket a year at home or would it be one day cricket?

Reducing the number of counties would be a good idea as it seems there are less people playing the game now then 25 years ago. What is the ECB doing to increase participation?

There seem to be so many problems with how the game is run and those that are running seem to be unaccountable. The last away ashes results might be more of the norm to come.

28 to win

All in all, a pretty poor effort from England. Difficult to imagine where Colly will find the positives from this that he can talk about in a hours time

Everyone knew that despite the first two flat deck snore draws, eventually this England batting line up would find a way to collapse in a heap the moment a deck even slightly challenging was put in front of them (or under them, if you like).

Hearty congratulations to the Windies, don't mind seeing them beat us...hopefully Windies can kick on and get better on the back of this. A few promising players....

But for England....well. Leaving their two best bowlers at home should at home arrogant and foolhardy.

And Root has to go now. Can't rebuild the house on the sand.

it is hard to see Root surviving as captain, but if Stokes doesn't want it, then it's equally hard to see who else is up to the challenge.

I'd also like to congratulate WIndies. They set England in the first two tests and then exploited England's weaknesses to deliver the coup de grace

masterful from the both the administrators and the team

Morgs gets mentioned, but he won't be around much longer, and doesn't do fc anyway. Future coach perhaps.

I mentioned Morgs too after the ashes debacle, now I think about it. Probably a non-starter and It would be a Brearley stunt anyway, but England have lacked anyone with any sort of captaincy skills or tactical acumen in the test team for a little while now. Best players are not often best captains as well

I can't see any way A&B can continue to be left out after this.

That said, it's the batting that's been a problem for so long. No one has the patience to adapt and bat long.

It's the blueprint for beating England. Just don't collapse with the bat and England's batters will eventually hand you matches on a plate.

Well done WI. A deserved win, but as said above, was anyone expecting otherwise?

A few players had ok series. Root, Bairstow, Leach. Lawrence should get another go. The openers didn't do much though, and the fast bowlers were disappointing as a group. Don't know what Foakes' keeping was like, but he didn't make a fifty.

But then if JB1, Root, Lawrence and Stokes carry on that's the batting that just failed.

Joe Root's position would have been untenable years ago, let alone now, if there were anyone else. Stokes is the only other guaranteed pick in the team, and he's under enough pressure as it is - he's had mental health issues and I doubt being captain would help him there. And allrounders tend to make poor captains.

Here's a controversial idea: how about Stuart Broad for captain?
