ICC Men's T20 World Cup Sub Regional Africa Qualifier

Postby The Professor » Sat Oct 16, 2021 7:23 pm

This is the largest of the qualifying tournaments for next year's World Cup in Australia with 12 countries battling it out over the next three weeks in Rwanda.

Ghana top the table today - however they did play twice. Their game against Seychelles saw the stunning figures of 5-9 from Ghanaian Kofi Bagabena as the tiny Island nation were all out for 95. The 32 year old also executed a hat trick. Ghana only needed half the overs to overturn that deficit.

Ghana's bowlers look strong as they also boast Samson Awiah who got 5-23 against Rwanda - meaning that Ghana boast the top two best figures of the tournament as well as the two highest wicket takers.

Swaziland registered the highest run scorer in the form of Muhammad Amin who got 80 in their victory over Lesotho. Amin is nearly 47 years old. Hope for us all.

Uganda won this unopposed with 6 out of 6 to qualify for the Global Round.

They achieved this off the back of some very strong bowling performances with Dinesh Nakrani being their top man. The Indian born player got 21 wickets - 7 more than anyone else in the competition to top the wicket taking league.

Rwanda, who finished third, had the highest run scorer with Orchide Tuyisenge's 199 runs in six games topping that particular standing.

The second group of teams to go through to the Global Round kicked off today. The competition consists of Botswana, Cameroon, Mozambique, Tanzania and Sierra Leone.

The first match of the day saw the highest ranked team, Botswana, beat Sierra Leone comfortably. The Botswanan captain Karabo Motlhanka put on 74 as his team posted 157. They then set about getting regular wickets and got Sierra Leone out for 85.

In the second game, Tanzania scored the 13th highest T20I of all time in their game against Mozambique. They smashed out a huge 242-6 in their 20 overs with Ivan Selemani top scoring with 81. Mozambique made a decent fist of it and got to 155 but nobody was going to top that.

Despite it being a good day for batters, there were 6 bowlers who got threefers. Botswana's Dhruv Maisuria was the most economical leaking just 12 runs.

In a triumph of scheduling Tanzania and Botswana went through the competition undefeated and then met in the last game of the tournament. Despite the best efforts of the Botswanan bowlers, Tanzania won and progressed to the global Qualifier.

It is hard luck on the Botswanan bowling attack who have been the strongest in the tournament. Dhruv Maisuria got another threefer today and finished the competition with 11 wickets - the highest of anyone. In terms of runs on the board Ivan Selemani of Tanzania led throughout. After scoring 81 in his first game against Mozambique and following it up with 70 against Sierra Leone, he was able to glide through the rest of the tournament and still finish 45 runs ahead.

The World Cup African Qualifiers is the Avengers Assemble of the two sub competitions to see who moves to the qualifying places. This sees the two tup teams from the previous competitions facing off against each other.
Each team is playing two games a day so it is turning over at a rate of knots. Uganda and Kenya are going great guns and do not meet until the final day of the competition. As it stands they have won three and lost one.

Kenya are performing well with the bat with Alex Obanda bagging 181 across his four games whilst Uganda’s Riazat Ali Shah’s 8 wickets @ 8.12 is the pick of the bowlers.

Tanzania beat Uganda in the final (round of fixtures) as the two undefeated teams went head to head….and it wasn’t really close as Uganda got Tanzania out for 68 and then reached the target in a leisurely fashion. It is a shame for Tanzania – who have been so impressive – to be so humbled at the last hurdle. Uganda will now progress to the Global final.

Kenya had a disappointing performance overall, finishing with 4 wins and 2 losses, but they did boast the competition’s best performer. Alex Obanda scored 72 more runs than anyone else in the competition at an average of 46.20. In terms of bowling excellence SanjayKumar Thakor got two threefers in his last two games for Tanzania to finish top of the tree with 10.
