ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Region Qualifier

Postby The Professor » Fri Oct 15, 2021 7:21 pm

The start of the 2021 World Cup seems just the right time to kick start a tournament to qualify for the 2022 edition.

This competition has a bit of extra pizzazz as Italy have gone on a rather Anglo-Centric push and are coached by Gareth Berg and saw the debuts of Jade Dernbach and Grant Stewart today as Italy beat Denmark by 6 wickets with 13 balls remaining.

The best bowler in the game was not one of the newbies.....and wasn't even Italian. Denmark's Delawar Khan got 2-5 from his 3.

Jersey beat Germany in the morning game - a fixture that has produced the highest run scorer (50 for Jersey's Harrison Carlyon) and the best figures (Germany's Sahir Naqash with 3-30.)

For all their County Championship imports, Italy were humbled by Jersey today as the island nation defended their total of 139 clinically. Ben Ward was the all round hero for Jersey as he got 33* and 2-17 from his 4 overs to put the Romans to the sword.

Germany beat Denmark in the other fixture.

Harrison Carlyon backed up his 50 against Germany yesterday with a score of 29 to give himself a 12 run lead at the top. Italy's Jaspreet Singh is one of the 3 bowlers with 4 wickets but his comes with the lowest economy - 4.50.

Jersey made it 4 out of 4 today and continued their dominance at the top of the table. Benjamin Ward claimed the second best figures of the tournament (4-18) as Jersey shout their nearest rivals out for 85. Their dominance really has been clear for all to see.

As well as being a handy bowler, Ward is also the highest scoring batsmen...although 93 from 4 games is not ground-breaking stuff. His Jersey team mate Charles Perchard's 10 wickets is the most for any player.

Jersey are going to progress to the global qualifying round after they won their game against Italy today whilst Germany handed Denmark their 5th loss in a row.

There is one more round of matches where top play bottom and Germany and Italy play off for second place (which means nothing).

Michael Richardson of Germany and once of Durham scored the tournament's highest total of 61* against Denmark today to overtake Ward in top spot for most runs in the competition. Perchard did not get a wicket today but he is still the leading wicket taker.
