To me its seems logical to have your hardest hitters preparing to face up the most balls. Bairstow is neither as fluid, nor bats as long, as Buttler. The argument batting him lower is he can do the same, but run out of time to impact the game making up for others. Not sure there really is much argument from a tactical sense to have the most effective players potentially remain not out.

You cant quantify coolness in a chase in stats on cricinfo

That ability to manage a chase and hit sixes under pressure with a match on the line has been the trademark of buttlers career

The joe root sized hole in the top order in ODIs looking quite big atm, Morgan and stokes badly struggling despite no scoreboard pressure

Normally root comes in and rotates the strike in these situations

one of the biggest collapse off recent times.

9 wickets for 105, and when the collapse started England needed only 5 an over with 9 wickets left.

Pretty pathetic really

After that opening partnership turned a 320 total into basically a 250 total all one of the experienced players had to do was knock it around and you win 99 times out of 100

Wasn't very smart cricket

Batting powerplay is at the start, meaning value for big hitters is amplified in the first period of an innings. After that, there should be no difference between how batters look to play, everyone should in 20 overs be looking to hit as much as possible on full throttle. Therefore if one player bats longer and quicker, it leaves less runs for the others in more time. You want that person's true value to have been reached, leaving Buttler at 6 with spare balls is an utterly pointless exercise.

If you want to look at ways to be more efficient, then batting Stokes high is an instant win. In a period of 4 years since 2017 where England average 146SR with him in the team, he is at 132 which is significantly lower than the other players in the line up. And his bowling isnt that far away from a disaster 9 an over.

Struggling to understand the logic of Stokes batting at 3 when he is a frontline bowler. Surely Moeen Ali is more suited to the role, especially when he is a top order batsman by trade for Worcestershire.

England's square pegs in round holes policy now applying to the ODI setup.

Didn't realise Buttler was doing so well as a T20 opener.

Presume he's not tailing off, or pasting associate nations then.

And there's Hales who they are still ignoring, who had a good record in T20s.
I always say that everybody's right.

At the point he came in, the bookies wrent returning much on England win bets.... probably sent him out for some batting practice, and then it backfired.
