Naturally the team and those around it were delighted ; both from the point of view of coming back from a poor run and a lot of heavy criticism , and also with the unexpected nature of the win - after the game looked a nailed on draw at the start of day five. And supporters are happy to have something to celebrate after the horrors of the World Cup.

But I'm not sure that anyone has declared that this puts them on the road to world domination...most of the comment has been on the lines of "a step in the right direction" ...and of course some satisfaction in several young players doing very well and one or two older ones apparently regaining a bit of form.

I think the players themselves are well aware there are tougher trials ahead ; and that they will be judged more on how they handle them...rightly so. Doesn't mean we can't enjoy what was a pretty remarkable session , regardless of the questionable quality of the opposition.

Good points as always alfie, but I do get a bit 'annoyed' at the likes of Botham going from ''abysmal' to 'magnificent' after almost every game. Saying that Joe Root is going to be an all time great is way over the top - yes he's doing well at the moment but let's not get carried away! There have been other similar comments too.

Of course I was pleased England won - although part of me, and I expect some others on this board, are a bit concerned that we're still papering over the cracks at both management and playing level.

Oh and I'm grumpy today!

It was an epochal win because it was England's first away win in over ten years without Pietersen in the side, since the famous Joburg Test of 2005. Since then, KP has averaged 76 in twelve England victories, with four tons and four fifties.

It looks like Cook and Bell missed one of those wins each and Anderson two. Anyone remember which games?

Answers.

Cook missed the 2006 game v India in Mumbai in his debut series. Shah came in and Bell opened.

Bell missed the win in Mumbai in 2012, with Bairstow filling in.

Anderson missed the tour to Bangladesh in 2010, and both wins.

I'm guessing Bell missed the last win in India when he went home for the birth of his first child?

I can't remember Cook missing a Test so must have been before his debut?

Or I could be writing gibberish.

Good memory about Bell's absence. I presumed he was injured.

Cook had played at Nagpur and Mohali before missing the Mumbai win.

I'd forgot about the birth too.

England haven't played a great deal of away test cricket in the last 4 years, 2 of those years with only just one test match.

2011 - 1 test v Australia
2012 - 3 tests v Pakistan, 2 tests v Sri Lanka, 4 tests v India
2013 - 3 tests v New Zealand, 4 tests v Australia
2014 - 1 test v Australia

Lost ten Tests though. The one series win being the remarkable win in India. A series is missing from this winter, with the big build up for the WC meaning only one winter tour.

UAE is not a happy hunting ground for any touring side, credible draw at Sri Lanka, series in New Zealand could have gone three ways.

A stat not really to read into when England's preparation in the last four years was orientated towards the World Cup.
