Maybe he didn't want the pressure or disappointment of not making it. Declare just short and you can always make the case you turned your back on it, fail to get there not so much

Indeed, I have to salute him being self-aware to know that taking the record against this bowling attack would sour it somewhat. Well played Wiaan.

Reminds me of Peshawar in 1998 when Mark Taylor declared on 334 refusing to go past Bradman. The team even voted the night before for him to go for the record, but he parked it at even with the Don and walked off the field.
