it wasn't scoring 400+ and losing that was the rarity BFL, it was scoring 400+ and then losing by an innings, so this one doesn't count for that

It's still the highest score ever in a losing cause, only the 16th time a team has scored 500+ and lost, and only the 12th time a team has declared their first innings on 400+ and lost. Some unpleasant records for BD.

A great effort from NZ. But you do have to feel for Bangladesh.

Apart from the bad luck with injuries , they actually ended up suffering for their good rate of scoring in the first innings : had they made 595 at an "old style" scoring rate they'd probably have taken enough time out of the game to render a result impossible...
Actually I think that has happened to a few teams in recent years. (England in India , to a point ) Not complaining , mind ; it is a good thing that results can be achieved even after huge first innings. But I think the modern approach - coupled with the inability of most teams to adapt to a defensive method in their second innings when their own chance of winning has gone - accounts for the increase in these "surprise" results. The days of the "bore draw" may be numbered ?

Teams batting second on really good batting surfaces know they aren't out of the game and if they get a solid start and bat long they are able to really put pressure on . I wonder if we will eventually see more captains choosing to field first on "roads" in hopes of bringing off such a result ?

Of course you are then screwed if the surface deteriorates rapidly ; but most of them don't seem to these days...

gutted for Bangladesh that they lost, but they lost it themselves...poor batting performance second time round, and good attacking batting from NZ, grabbing a valuable victory

Could be an interesting day tomorrow, bit of pressure on Bangladesh in the first session would set up an interesting chase.

Don't see why this is such a shock result really, the game wasn't nailed on as a draw at the start of the day and all it was going to take was a daft shot to put the pressure firmly on Bangladesh. They aren't exactly known for their steady nerve in any format.

There's a letter to cricinfo (Ask Steven) about scoring double tons and losing, after Azhar did it v Australia, and again the fate of Shakib here. The highest score to lose is Ricky Ponting against India in Adelaide with 242. I was a bit nonplussed to read Brian Lara scored double hundreds and lost three times!

I think it's safe to say Bangladesh are no longer whipping boys and can be taken seriously at test level.

Their pace bowling attack look very capable (Subashis Roy is a very nippy bowler). The difference being Bangladesh pace bowlers are undercooked and did not execute their skills as effectively as New Zealand, a lack of a proper warm up was there to see.

On Day 5 Bangladesh went for the win rather than avoiding defeat, but Mitchell Santner and Neil Wagner bowled consistently for a rather long spell, plus the two injured players was a disadvantage.

The pitch didn't seem as flat as folk suggest, even on Day 5 there was still some live grass but the pitch firmed up (thanks to the Wellington wind) rather than break up. Also the pitch didn't really slow down and contained pace throughout, but played true allowing batsmen to play shots with confidence.

It's a shame Bangladesh aren't touring England any time soon, because they would be credible opposition and are capable of producing a result.

In the end it turned out to be a great day of cricket, although at the time it was a dull fest and not pleasant to watch in the wild.wind.

to be honest, I don't think it is safe to say Bangladesh are, "no longer the whipping boys". They'e done nothing on this tour so far to show they've any real improvement.

They are making progress, but they need to be more consistent, batting collapses happen to everyone, but you can always almost predict when it's going to happen with Bangladesh, and they need to try and cut that out

A single Test win against England and one good batting innings does not progress make.

They have time and again blown very strong positions in all formats, as I said above, I really don't think the last Test was a surprising result.
