anyone with 6 tons in 50 innings , an average over 40 with a s/r over 90 cant be all bad

he is just having a bad run

Or he can't play in these conditions. Averaged 15 in 6 innings in SA and NZ last year as well. He was having a "good run" against SL at home just before this. I refuse to believe its just form. His technique is hopeless for an opener in these conditions.

I do feel that Shikhar will not get as much squared up in Asian conditions and he will score 50+ and 100+. If some batsman is getting squared up then it is wrong with the technique, major reasons could be the stance apart from other factors like judging the line well and hence leaving a ball rather than trying to cover up the line unnecessarily for a harmless delivery and thus getting squared up only to edge it. Knowing the off stump would be the first key solution imo to avoid this issue. Stance is also something which can be worked upon to get rid of this. Form yes, it can get over some technical issues or mask them.

Against quality spin attacks, he'll struggle in Asia too IMO. He is very ordinary vs off spin, at least in Tests.

I don't think he will struggle against spinners although he will get out after doing his job and giving a good contribution. He can tackle turn even though it is more than swing.
Also before he used to get out of crease a lot to pacers. Now he does not and stays back at crease. It is a definitely plan from him. But i don't think he will stop coming out to spinners. And the spinners now are struggling since chucking is strictly observed. Suddenly specialist spinner Senanayake looks to be more worse than even non specialist Moeen Ali. As if a kid is throwing the ball first time and doesnt knows how to turn it. Even Samuels has become very ordinary bowler now. Same might happen to Hafeez and even Ajmal without that chucking effect. Only leg spinners will not worry about chucking. Afridi doesn't plays tests any more. And facing leg spinners is easy for Shikhar as it comes in to his body and cuts the chances of stump outs or playing against the ball turning wrong way. Apart from all this i think he can disturb the line and length of the spin bowlers. There are no quality top class spin bowlers any more. Hearth and Lyon are the top two now.

Better for the series that India didn't lose here, although I think if England don't make the final may feel a little hard done by after so narrowly missing out against Australia on Friday and beating India comprehensively before that.

All hypothetical at this point ...but it really depends : if India beat them easily they'll not have much to complain about. If they were to lose by two runs they might reasonably feel a bit unlucky ; but at least they will still have had four decent warm ups , and the Cup is the only event which counts anyway.

True. And I'm not sure how much we'll learn about either team when they get beaten by Australia again in the tri-series final.

Newman underestimating india here.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/cricke ... icely.html
India may be the defending champions but they are not looking like it in Australia. They are already weary having lost a Test series here and seemed uninterested when they were thrashed by England in the Tri-series in Brisbane.

If England meet india in Melbourne I highly doubt india will look uninterested plus not sure Melbourne will have the pace and bounce.
Plus india did nearly score 300+ in the Australia vs India melbourne game.

Not saying india will win the world cup but India does have good record in ICC event and I highly doubt india would give the trophy away lightly.

England vs India looks a 50/50 game to me if they meet in the quarters finals not really much to choose between the teams.
Melbourne isn't gonna have the pace and bounce to worry the Indians so not sure how England are gonna get 10 cheap Indian wickets again and England still haven't really posted a match winning total or chased a big total yet.

England probably got the best group since 50% chance of getting Pak/WI/Ireland and only SA looks a tough game with India being a 50-50.

England should get to the Semis since I can't see Pak/WI doing much.

I pretty much agree with Newman. India haven't looked convincing in this Australian summer, and are definitely not my pick as a possible winner, from what I've seen.

Not sure you can read much into it after one game. You don't become a good or bad team overnight. Just think people are going over the top over one game plus I never really liked paul Newman writing he always sounds bitter in his articles.
Not sure india not training/ not training hard in Perth because of the weather is a big deal end of the day the game is meaningless and dhoni and co are using the 4-5 days as break after a long tour and to get refreshed for the World Cup. I just find it so annoying that they want teams to constantly train hard and play 100 percent every game especially in warm up games.

Ps anyways made the comment since not sure the gabba game will have any bearing if they meet at the knockout stages. Let's say if india wins at Perth and the final will they suddenly become favorites no they won't india will always be 3rd to 4th favorite and the india vs england game would be 50-50 could go either way. The Perth or the gabba game will never change that.

if I was an indian fan my biggest worry would be that atm they don't look to have a clue what the bowling line-up should be , and that's with only a couple of games to go

obviously with the format being what it is there are 6 more games to sort it out before they play a match that means anything but the side doesn't look settled at all
