I saw the 3 penalty shouts and if I'm honest, I thought that the first one was a dive; there was contact, but not much and the player paused as if weighing up his options before deciding to go down. The second one I didn't think was a handball, because he was running back at speed when the ball struck him at point blank range and so to me his arm was not in an unnatural position (nothing says unnatural like a defender trying to run fast with his arms behind his back). The third one was just a penalty every day of the week. I have no idea why it wasn't overturned.
The problem with all of this, is that everyone has seen those sorts of penalties given throughout the season. I have no problem with the first two decisions, but given the inconsistency, I can understand why people get so upset.
The handball rule needs to be overhauled as does the offside rule. It shouldn't be right that a goal can be ruled out because of a 1cm offside. At the very least there should be some sort of visible evidence without any technology. If it needs a 25 frame a second camera to spot an infringement then it shouldn't be an infringement... an umpires call perhaps. The handball rule is a complete mess and seems to vary between countries. The Livramento handball against PSG was handball in Europe but wouldn't have been in the PL. The Young handball shout wasn't a handball in the PL, but probably would have been if the opponent was PSG and that just isn't good enough
For VAR to overturn a refereeing error, then it has to be clear and obvious, so if it probably is an error, but it isn't clear and obvious, VAR doesn't necessarily get involved. Lineker is lobbying for an appeal system like in cricket, where each team gets one review per half and if the ref's decision (or VAR's decision) is upheld then you lose it. So in the Liverpool case where VAR completely screwed up, then the team could challenge it. If you successfully overturn the decision you keep your review, but I'm not sure how that would work in football or how you'd prevent teams time wasting by using a spurious review in injury time for the sole purpose of disrupting play, just because you have a review left and you don't want to waste it. And how long would it be before players, managers, fans and journos demand 3 reviews per half? Suddenly the game would become so stop start it would more closely resemble American football.
Just get the rules right in the first place and stop making them so bloody complicated and open to subjective interpretation; get agreements to make them universal between all the leagues, then get more competent officials overseeing the review system and that would go a long way to fixing these problems
