well, Man City and Newcastle were both held today, so they have a massive opportunity to widen the gap further tomorrow. Then the small matter of a first encounter of the season with Newcastle on Tuesday in fortress London

Makes me laugh that Klopp moans about having a ceiling, then buys £37m Gakpo (a good piece of business, I think) and tries to buy £130m Bellingham, £100m Enzo Fernandez and would like a crack at Mac Allister too

oh and Mbappe in the summer

still... if Klopp can't get any of these bargain basement players, Chelsea will doubtless pick them up

I was wrong on all counts. Trips did play (so perhaps he wasn't on 5 yellows, or they appealed, or something) and Newcastle kept another clean sheet and walked away with a creditable point. Joelinton had the best chance of the match, seemingly; heading wide at the back post with the goal at his mercy

6th clean sheet on the trot in all comps, 11 goals conceded in 18 PL matches. I think that makes 10 clean sheets in the league. Hard to believe this is a Newcastle team with those numbers

You know it's going well when Arteta completely loses his blob and starts having a pop at the nicest man in the premier league.

Arteta spent almost the entire night on the edge of his technical area, throwing his arms around, seemingly. Hardly the way to relax his players so that they can play their best football. Polar opposite to the calm and assured way that Howe conducts himself and the Newcastle players respond to that.

Bad tempered match all round, I think. Ends an 11 match winning streak at home for Arsenal

Everton were horrendous last night, and made it easy for us. Gueye and Coady gifted us goals..... the players have clearly given up totally playing for Lampard, surely he doesnt last till the end of they day? Once the 2nd went in Everton lost their minds for 5 minutes.

I have no idea how Lampard got a PL job - I wonder if this will be his last too. Tactically boring as hell.

As for the Toon Army, gone 9 hours without conceding a goal. Eddie Howe has turned this bunch of no hope lower league fodder into the best drilled unit in world football at the moment, just imagine what another few transfer windows could do for this side? If you can create an impenetrable wall including elements like Dan Bunn and Fabien Scharf, then what could he do with actual quality players?

Great to see a youngish English manager doing a great job.

ah well, there you go..... 3rd round exit to lower league opposition yet again

As soon as I saw the team sheet I was worried. 8 changes and Newcastle didn't start playing until 5 of them had been replaced. Not often that I think Eddie Howe got something wrong, but it felt like that even before the first kick of the match.

Quite why Lascelles, Ritchie and Lewis were playing I have no idea, because we're trying to ship them out in this window to make space in the squad, maybe even Dubravka too, although I'd be happy if he stayed.

I thought Wednesday were terrific and fully deserving of their scalp. It doesn't matter that nearly everything they created came from Newcastle mistakes, they worked their socks off harrying Newcastle into making those mistakes and the 2 goals were well worked and confidently taken. Just a pity that Newcastle seemed intent on blasting every gilt edged opportunity, of which there were several, either over the top or straight at the keepers legs. I've spent ages defending Chris Wood as a player to everyone I know, but I've had enough now. He's had match defining gifts on goal in each of the last 3 games and fluffed every one of them, with today's the worst of the lot. Time for Eddie to call it a day with him. Seemingly Juventus made an approach for Wood in December to test the water and we told them to ssip off. Go figure
