So, Euros, Wimbledon and world Test championship over, Olympics and England-India still to come. Oh and there's some rugby on too. And the Ashes later in the year. Astonishingly big year for sport, especially in the UK given 30,000+ cases a day. Was astonished how few masks I saw in the Wembley crowd. Someone missed the opportunity to make a quick quid with St George branded ones...

I can't remember when I cared less about an Olympic games. Probably 1996, the last time the Euros were worth watching from an England perspective. Coincidence?

Italy were pretty much the best team in the tournament from day 1 and were deserved winners. 38 games (?) unbeaten now. Once they got the equaliser last night I was hoping we'd get to pens, although we were imo the better side in ET.
On to Qatar, when again we should have a chance of a semi place. Some will be saying we can win it but I'm still not convinced our players are as good as the media like to make out. Hopefully Foden, who I do rate will have more of an impact then, along with Kane, Sterling etc. A ball playing midfielder is one player we need still.

England would do well to stop blaming and start celebrating.

Great achievement and the country needs to get behind a team that is young and going places.

Reckon that is the best comment I've seen reading through the last few pages.

Of course I am disappointed like everyone. But I won't let the final letdown spoil my memories of the last couple of weeks.

Will leave the expert analysis to those with more expertise in this game. But feel obliged to point out that , despite things England players/manager got wrong , they ended 120 minutes level against a far more experienced opponent . And that if anyone had the "luck" on their side it was Italy : avoided a penalty which would likely have sealed a win for England ; didn't get a red card for a horrendous foul - and even scored a goal after the ball shot around like a game of pinball before ending up in the net.
Italy were the better team overall - not denying that. But I do not think England were in any way shamed.

Where they go from here depends on how players - and manager - react to this defeat ; and plan to improve , as they must , for the next major tournament. But given the youth and promise at their disposal I for one am hopeful they might actually win one of these again in my lifetime...

I'm getting the impression that the game is being written as England getting a footballing lesson. I think that's a bit simplistic. England were on top for the first 30m and well deserved their lead. Italy then dominated until Chiesa went off, through working hard and giving England little space, and England couldn't keep hold of the ball. Which is a common faling of England sides in pressure games. The rest of the game was a bit ragged and both sides looked tired, but England reasserted themselves. I was quite confient in injury time after it appeared England had been holding on for the second half.

Penalties were a disaster! Has that ever happened before?

I'll tune in again for the WC with some interest, if they qualify.

Maguire played a pass along the ground to a forward which night be the best pass I've ever seen from an England centre half. But then I'm used to Tony Adams and Terry Butcher...

Apparently there has been a lot of racist abuse online. Which is the most disappointing thing of all.

I loved Rashford's penalty. Did the keeper with his eyes. Would have been awesome if it had gone in.

Rashford, Sancho and Saka being subjected to racist abuse on social media.

Sadly, I can't say I'm surprised.

That's why I support the taking of the knee.

Should see some of the posts this week on the ex-pat in Brussels forum on FB. Aside from the usual classics relating to Brexit, I got told I was "subhuman scum", that I came from a land of "no civility", that mine and my family are not "Welcome in Europe anymore", and that should I indeed go out to the bar British ex-pats were suggesting to meet at to watch the game, we would all get our lights kicked in because English people were not welcome here.

Worth noting none of the people posting these messages were Belgians, just other European ex-pats, and judging on names alone, mostly Eastern European.

I only posted if any ex-pats were watching in a particular bar for meeting up

Because of the EU negotiations or anti-UK sentiment generally?

Its all because of Brexit. Id say most people on some level have their vision of the UK become more negative, but the vast majority fall in the "had a lot of respect for the UK, now find the situation just sad" territory. It's very rare to be faced with out and out xenophobia, especially in a city with so many communities of immigrants and three official languages, but the football and England's success has very much brought all the idiots out to play.

There is certainly a similar view here regarding peoples views of the UK. Many people see the UK in a different light.

Their is no hatred but people seem to have lost a lot of respect for the UK and the way it has:is handling Brexit. Many Swedes used to have a soft spot for the UK, but that seems to have dried up. Not seen any xenophobia from people though. Just indifference where once there was respect.
