To start things off...
Athletic Bilbao beat Barca 4-0 in the 1st leg of the Spanish Super Cup!!
Barca played a weakened side but still an astonishing result. Looks like their chances of winning the sextuple is over...

Nice to learn the Spanish equivalent of Fleetwood Town are re-instated in La Liga after Elche got demoted for financial mismanagement.

Barca are still favourites.
Madrid's depth is just as bad. They have one striker in their whole squad.

Probably not going to ship goals though.

Barca's defence does look all over the place. But once Alba comes back and Bravo remains keeper, they'll be fine like last season. Any defensive injuries though and they could struggle. Although even if they do leak goals like a few years back, their attack is so strong that they can easily outscore teams.

Couldn't believe how bad Barca were last night.
They'll soon be back to their best I reckon.

Real Madrid held to a 0-0 draw against newly promoted Sporting Gijon. Sporting haven't spent a single penny in transfer fees on their current squad. 15 of their 18 today came up from the academy. Sporting were outstanding and should stay up if they play like that.
Elsewhere, Barca held on to a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao while Atletico also won 1-0.
Not the easiest of starts for the big teams...

Barca win 1-0 with Vermaelen scoring his first goal. Still far from their best.
Real Madrid win 5-0, James and Bale on form. Ronaldo and Messi yet to get off the mark.
Atletico win 3-0 away at Sevilla which confirms they are definitely title contenders.

Some of those goals from Madrid were spectacular
The keeper made some very good saves to keep Ronaldo out who could have had 2 or 3 goals
Barca have taken a big risk letting Pedro go as the quality of cover in case of injury is quite low until January when the likes of arda turan can play

Five goals for Ronaldo, in Madrid's 0-6 thrashing of Espanyol.
