Must be poor defence!

He's lucky that Mangala is an even worse CB than he is. He single-handedly kept half the Utd team onside. And they paid £30m for him!!!

I'm glad I spent my money on games at the start of the season rather than this.

Many on here were Van Gaal out, where's your humble pie?

He's spent £153 million on players so you would expect an improvement, still going to be a blank season for United so far as trophies go.

Yep, 250 million spent in 2 years to finish in the top 4. And lets be honest, United have not started playing well till the last month.

No European distractions as such and a keeper that might not be there next year to save them.

In saying all this, they have done well to turn the season around, and play some nice footy now. Its amazing the difference between the two Manchester teams, who would have though the turn around like this 3 months ago?

Got to applaud Van Gaal.....

Took over a side that had won the Premier League 14 months before, add the highest transfer spending for one window in history, but somehow he had them playing so utterly terrible in the first half of the season, now they are actually playing like a team assembled with lots of cash instead of spare change, he has people forgetting that third place for 20 years was pretty much an utter failure for Manchester United.

Third place is nothing, lets be frank. Chelsea win their game in hand, they are 11 points above United and have had to play 8-10 more highly competitive games, which has taken the toll on the squad.

11 points...... a HUGE gap. This is failure for the money and facilities at his disposal.

If it hadnt been for Moyes utterly terrible tenure, Van Gaal's relative success would not be seen so favourable. In fact, had Ferguson just won the league and left, Van Gaal might not even have made this far in the season

It was always going to take some time for Utd to get it back together.

I always felt Moyes might have done it with more time but we'll never know.

It has taken a while for his signings - Mata & Fellaini to gel into the team. LVG has bought wisely although there are one or two signings with question marks.

The defence needs tightening up. A few times City caught them on the hop and that leads us to another improvement - De Gea.

Sadly it looks as if he's on his way to RM at the end of the season.

I never said it was a success or that Van Gaal has been a total success! 3rd place isn't anything to celebrate and I don't think United fans will be doing that. But after a season where United was ripped apart and finished 7th, we've started to see what Van Gaal wants United to play like and he needed to be given time and people didn't want to give him that time earlier in the season. After the Newcastle and Arsenal games, just before this run in, people were tearing into United. I think we can use this as a platform for next season.

We've actually challenged the big sides in the last 4 games and convincingly so. We dominated this game after the first 10. 4-2 flatters City so much. The players are confident in him to and that is the most important thing. Coming back from 1-0 down today to be 4-1 was inconceivable before, but we now have that belief again. Moyes couldn't ever dream of bringing that confidence. We probably won't beat Chelsea as we aren't at their level but that wasn't what this season was about imo. Spending money doesn't guarantee success. Van Gaal's current best side only has two of his signings which just shows that in a way. He's revitalised Smalling, Young, Valencia and is using Fellaini in his best position. I don't think many would have put those 4 in United's best team at the start of the year.

We aspire to be like Man City - David Moyes. ;)

And come on Southampton for 4th.

Has he? Who? With the exception of a few early good performances from the former, Di Maria and Falcao have been massively expensive failures. Blind has been nothing more than meh, playing in at least three different positions as he doesn't appear good enough (or suited enough) to hold down one spot. I've seen nothing to impress me from Rojo. Valdes hasn't played a single minute, but no doubt is being remunerated very well for his services.

Herrera has been alright, but he clearly wasn't a LVG signing (nor was Shaw).

And surely if he'd bought wisely, the defence wouldn't need tightening up!

The negative way Chealski are playing at present i actually think United will beat them.

The last month Chealski have been poor, and so very boring to watch.

One shot on target today, and they get the win. I would really like anyone other than chealski to win the league this year, but that's not going to happen.

United at present are playing with out pressure, and i actually think they will finish second. Once again it is enjoyable watching United. But im a long way from being convinced they have turned a corner

Our players have appeared distinctly disinterested for months and today was merely another reflection of that.

Consequently, Pellegrini's position now seems untenable but if Guardiola is unobtainable - which appears to be the case - I don't see a suitable successor.

They are getting paid a lot of money not to care. Which manager would want the job?

Lucien Favre seems to be a top upcoming manager although he's never managed a major team.
