Arguably the greatest extra time of all time last night - United pull off a late miracle, after 5 goals in about 10 minutes shared between the teams.

3 games ago, Carlisle Utd (who I have a soft spot for) pretty much needed to win all 6 of their remaining games to have any chance of staying in the football league. They have won the first 3 of those 6 matches and are now only 4 points behind Tranmere in 22nd. They play Accrington Stanley (who 're they?) away on Monday who are 21st. Tranmere have a tricky away game to Barrow. Carlisle can't do it, can they?

They are an odd story... they went into freefall in league 1, got new American owners, but couldn't avoid relegation. The new owners have invested in the ground and the training facilities, but have struggled to recruit the right personnel, despite getting rid of a load of players and bringing in a host of fresh faces last summer and have been more or less rock bottom all season. Now, since the appointment of 'Sparky' Hughes as manager, they seem to be clawing themselves, dragging themselves, into something not quite as useless, hopeless and hapless as they were, but it's all a bit last gasp and if they lose even one of these last 3 games it will surely already be too late. If they aren't able to pull off what would be a modern day miracle, I just hope they can hang onto/keep faith with Hughes, because the owners won't have a clue how to get straight back up and he just might

I think that's what's known as crashing back to earth. So many people were saying how Newcastle looked unstoppable and could beat any team in the world right now, but I looked at Villa and saw a side in the same sort of form, that had lost to us in the last 3 matches to the tune of 11-2 and I figured that by the law of averages (and my own glass half empty attitude) this game could easily provide a reckoning

Can't afford to do that at Chelsea in the run in given that we still have to go to Brighton, who are one of our bogey teams and Arsenal who, like Villa, have been on the wrong end of the last 3 meetings

Unlike all the 'experts', I won't mind if Newcastle don't make it to the Champions league. If we get top 5 then fine, but we were out of our depth last time, despite the spanking of PSG at SJP and so I'd happily settle for a more entry level of European football. I see no reason why we couldn't win the Europa conference league and bring home more silverware. I disagree with the 'experts' who think that CL is a must if we want to hang onto our top players..... our top players all have lots of contract left and PSR will not be an issue for next season, so the club would have to want to sell for any of them to go anywhere, despite the daily round of idle newspaper speculation regarding Isak, Guimaraes and Tonali

lost late on to Cheltenham, but didn't matter in the end because Tranmere won and secured their own safety

Will Sparky stay or go? Whether Carlisle come straight back up will likely depend on him being persuaded to stay on for the project. The new owners bought a shed load of players in January, but that almost none of them were in the first team by the end, probably says a lot about the quality of player they bought. The classic rookie owner mistake..... back the manager in the transfer market and then sack him a few games later, leaving the club saddled with players who don't fit into the new manager's system.

Newcastle came away from Brighton with a draw. Isak scored the equaliser from the spot after two over-ruled penalties (I think), although by all accounts the other two didn't have a lot of merit to them. Worryingly Isak seems to be dealing exclusively in pens these days.

After Man City won to move ahead of Newcastle, Chelsea also beat Liverpool to put the squeeze on Newcastle. They have to come up here next weekend and it will be a must win game for the Mags in the top 5 race. As things stand, Newcastle's run in of Chelsea (H), Arsenal (A) and Everton (H) looks the toughest of the five teams chasing 3 CL spots
