Basically the ball crossed the bye line a good two feet away from the goal but bizarrely the ref awarded a goal.

It's seems odd to me that people will go out on a limb to save football clubs that have reached the end of the financial road due to rash decisions, having a poor grasp of finance, and sheer incompetence, yet every other organisation meeting the same fate is allowed to go completely to the wall with few questions asked.

going back a few years there was a well known incident at a match between partick thistle and dundee utd similar to that watford one

a dundee utd player scored with a shot from outside the box, it went right into the stanchion in the top corner and had clearly crossed the line but it bounced straight back out into the penalty area. everyone bar the officials knew it was a goal. one of the defenders had picked up the ball right in the middle of the penalty area and was about to kick it up the pitch for the restart when the referee was waving play on thinking the ball had hit the woodwork only. the defender handed the ball to the goalie and the game just continued as if nothing had happened.

so not only did the officials all miss the fact it was a goal, the referee also missed a defender standing still in the middle of the penalty area holding the ball in both hands for a few seconds.
