Racism in English football?

I think this is what sunk it for Suarez....

"For example, Mr Suarez said that he pinched Mr Evra's skin in an attempt to defuse the situation. He also said that his use of the word 'negro' to address Mr Evra was conciliatory and friendly. We rejected that evidence. To describe his own behaviour in that way was unsustainable and simply incredible given that the players were engaged in an acrimonious argument. That this was put forward by Mr Suarez was surprising and seriously undermined the reliability of his evidence on other matters. There were also inconsistencies between his accounts given at different times as to what happened."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/16375963.stm

Suarez admitted to using the words, and when his claim that they were used in a 'friendly' way was dismissed, he had no get-out clause....
Nobody has a stance quite like the mighty Shivnarine....

Why would you need a 115 page report?

I'm sure they could write a good explanation in 10 pages. The main point is Suarez has been charged for being racist, do they really need 115 pages to explain what happened. :dunno

Find this report a great read, would be nice if the FA can release untelevised video footage too.

Yeah agree with that.

The inconsistencies in Suarez's evidence to that of Kuyt and Comolli are quite damning and he changed his statement after video evidence. The fact that Kuyt went on record to say that Suarez said "because you are black" makes me confused why he wore a t-shirt supporting Suarez...

Yep Liverpool FC handled the entire thing very poorly, and makes you question how some of the management view racism. It's one thing being desperate the keep your player on the pitch, but do it in a professional manner, rather than carrying out a charade for all your fans to witness. It's hypocritical and disgraceful and Suarez got off very lightly.

I think the real problem with racism lies in the education of it. It is clear that many folks in the world simply don't understand what racism is, or the psychology of it. Something else worth noting is that there are plenty of people around the world that are proud to be racist.
I went to school in 5 different countries being an air force brat and got plenty of words and punches thrown at me depending on what stage of life my accent was in and the corresponding country. "Go home ya yank" was common place in the UK during the 70's.

I would say there are more racist people in the world than not, and it's very rare to meet someone that is completely non judgmental or prejudice in some way. Maybe a Dalai Lama who has never set foot out of Tibet.

A number of people believe that saying a racist word in the heat of the moment doesn't mean you're racist. Sorry, but even thinking it means you are racist end of story. Until you understand this fact you will be a racist. Sorry to be so harsh, but those out there that are not racists know what I'm talking about.

I don't entirely disagree with you the Waugh Twins, we all have racist biases, and this is due to our culutural heritage. But we are not racist. Racism is firmly believing that races exists, and that some are superior to others and therefor should be above them.

Yep I was probably a bit harsh there Keshto, it's a very touchy subject with me.

I see just in Liverpool FC will not appeal.

After all the Suarez T-shirts and everything, they have given up. I guess they know he is racist otherwise they would have at least challenged the FA's decision.

Yes it's all quite ridiculous, I'm watching sky sport right now and Liverpool and Suarez have released some ridiculous statements.

He should have just apologized as soon as he was accused and said that in his country the word is used differently (even though that's a load of crap) and probably would have had a one match ban. I'm glad in way He and Liverpool have handled this so poorly because it's shown their true colors (oops).

It's a shame because I've always liked Liverpool FC and was fortunate enough to see Ian Rush score for Wales way back. I think Kenny Dalglish needs to go or something needs to be changed there. I would be interested to know whom is behind the stance they took?

They should have either went one way or the other. If Suarez apoligised and admitted he had used that word in a normal way and that he didn't know it was racist then it could all have been forgotten and a few game ban. Liverpool weren't happy with the 8 match ban because they believe he isn't racist. They did many campaigns such as the T-shirts. If they are that adamant that Suarez was not racist to Evra then why did they choose not to appeal, what sort of message does that send out. It basically means they have given up and they know he is racist. Liverpool have just dug themselves into an even bigger hole. It could have been sorted out very quickly but they have prolonged this episode and they now admit defeat.

Ha, so he misses the City game but plays the United game. Nicely timed.

And this part of their statement:

In its determination to prove its conclusions to the public through a clearly subjective 115-page document, the FA panel has damaged the reputation of one the Premier League's best players, deciding he should be punished and banned for perhaps a quarter of a season. This case has also provided a template in which a club's rival can bring about a significant ban for a top player without anything beyond an accusation.

They still think he's innocent from what I can gather. Just that it's all a stitch up and they won't get the ban reduced. Btw, he isn't a racist as far as we know and this isn't what this case is all about, but he did racial abuse Evra and that's why it is 8 games, hopefully it's just a one time thing in an attempt to wind up the opponent that he took too far.
