And now the lower leagues are complaining bitterly about the sudden end to traditional revenue streams claiming a stitch up between the PL and the FA

The EFL have released a statement confirming those claims. The FA and PL came to a bilateral agreement to make the change, without any consoltation with the football league or any other clubs.

The FA says that all parties were in agreement

by this, they mean that this included the 4 EFL representatives..... who said they were basically told that this was the way it was going to be... take it or *modded* off

the EFL reps even asked for this to only apply only from round 3 onwards when the top clubs joined the comp, but were told no, it's from round 1... take it or *modded* off

It just makes no sense to me

Not even this, if you believe Steve Kavangh who was one of those EFL rrepsentatives, and the current Vice-Chairman of the FA Cup. He says the FA told everyone present that the FA Cup was the sole responsibility of the FA, and that the Professional Game Board (which is the actual guardian of the competition) had no right to change or question them. So it appears there wasn't even a take it or leave it, more just told the decision had been made and was not anything to do with them. Another EFPL representative from a League Two club says he was informed of the decision 15 minutes before it was publically announced.

Which seems to break the FAs governance rules into shreds. The sh** is going to hit the fan on this one

The good news for Newcastle..... WH are getting battered by Palace. 4-1 down at HT

The bad news.... we have to go to Palace on Wednesday and they'll be buoyed up (assuming they don't screw it up in this second half)

as soon as the ref gave Coventry the penalty in the 3rd min of stoppage time, I figured VAR was bound to over-rule it, just because it was against Man U...... but no... not today

And that is why I detest VAR. A toenail offside and the hysteria turns to shock.

I hadn't realised that Coventry had a goal ruled out in extra time injury time

That Man Utd only got through thanks to toenail, after being 3-0 up against a championship side, just goes to shoe how far they've fallen in recent years

ETH is a very lucky man. Any other manager would have been shown the door ages ago and it was only the protracted buy out saga that allowed him to get away with it

Forest still complaining about a bunch of penalties turned down, one which sounded like a pretty nailed on handball.

Ok to be upset/frustrated about it, but blasting the 3rd official on twitter and accusing of bias is not the way to go about getting grievances addressed...

I think this is one of those examples of the most obvious explanation being the truth. PGMOL made one mistake in sending a Luton fan to referee a game where Luton wanted Forest to lose. That referee then made three errors in not awarding penalties that I would safely say are given 95-99% of the time. Four huge errors.... I know PGMOL and the standard of referring is in an appalling state, but there comes a time where the only rational explanation is this is no accident. The third penalty couldnt have been clearer, and it defies belief it was not given. The first and second might have some level of debate, if it were not for the fact the referees have interpreted the rules in a certain way that means they are in practice always given.

PGMOL and PL can't really complain. Send referees to games with potential bias, then this is what you get. I sympathise with Forest, because I'd be fuming. A lot is being made about thier post, but I am more concerned about PGMOL explaining why Atwell was at that game.

If there is no foul play, then the level of incompetence is almost criminal.

I saw the 3 penalty shouts and if I'm honest, I thought that the first one was a dive; there was contact, but not much and the player paused as if weighing up his options before deciding to go down. The second one I didn't think was a handball, because he was running back at speed when the ball struck him at point blank range and so to me his arm was not in an unnatural position (nothing says unnatural like a defender trying to run fast with his arms behind his back). The third one was just a penalty every day of the week. I have no idea why it wasn't overturned.

The problem with all of this, is that everyone has seen those sorts of penalties given throughout the season. I have no problem with the first two decisions, but given the inconsistency, I can understand why people get so upset.

The handball rule needs to be overhauled as does the offside rule. It shouldn't be right that a goal can be ruled out because of a 1cm offside. At the very least there should be some sort of visible evidence without any technology. If it needs a 25 frame a second camera to spot an infringement then it shouldn't be an infringement... an umpires call perhaps. The handball rule is a complete mess and seems to vary between countries. The Livramento handball against PSG was handball in Europe but wouldn't have been in the PL. The Young handball shout wasn't a handball in the PL, but probably would have been if the opponent was PSG and that just isn't good enough

For VAR to overturn a refereeing error, then it has to be clear and obvious, so if it probably is an error, but it isn't clear and obvious, VAR doesn't necessarily get involved. Lineker is lobbying for an appeal system like in cricket, where each team gets one review per half and if the ref's decision (or VAR's decision) is upheld then you lose it. So in the Liverpool case where VAR completely screwed up, then the team could challenge it. If you successfully overturn the decision you keep your review, but I'm not sure how that would work in football or how you'd prevent teams time wasting by using a spurious review in injury time for the sole purpose of disrupting play, just because you have a review left and you don't want to waste it. And how long would it be before players, managers, fans and journos demand 3 reviews per half? Suddenly the game would become so stop start it would more closely resemble American football.

Just get the rules right in the first place and stop making them so bloody complicated and open to subjective interpretation; get agreements to make them universal between all the leagues, then get more competent officials overseeing the review system and that would go a long way to fixing these problems
