Lanka Premier League

Colombo (not at all suspiciously) pulled the first ever match of this reasonably promising looking T20 Franchise competition into a surprise Super Over victory.

It was Kusal Perera who did a lot of the heavy lifting for Kandy early on with a 52 ball 87 on the way to a huge 219....which Colombo just about reached before getting the 16 runs needed in the Super Over.

A solid 92* runs from 63 balls from Avishka Fernando saw Jafna win their first match against Galle.

Galle posted a decent 175 but Fernando led from the front and got them there with 3 balls in it.

Tomorrow is a double header with Dambully taking their bow against Kandy before Colombo play face Galle.

Looked like rain would be the star of the day.

It starred off by handing Dambulla a win against Kandy, where the chasing team only got 9 overs. It was captain Dasun Shanaka's big boy 73 from 37 that boosted the DLS score to skew things in their favour.

However it is Andre Russell to whom the day belonged. He scored the fifth quickest T20 half century off just 14 balls in a 5 over shoot out between Colombo and Galle. Colombo ended up scoring a huge 96 from their 5.

Colombo are now top with two wins in two.

Jaffna are looking the team to beat in this.

After winning by 8 wickets in their first fixture, they beat Dambulla by 66 runs today. This was largely off the back of 97* from Thisara Perrera batting at 7. He arrived at 64/5 after 8.3 overs. He left at 218/7 after 20. That total was never going to beaten.

In today's other fixture Khulna beat Galle to get their first win.

Another random weekday double header.

In the early game, a strong bowling performance for Colombo was not backed up by their batsmen. After limiting Dambulla to a reachable 175 - they collapsed to 147. Andre Russell will be disappointed that his bowling figures of 2-0-18-3 were not rewarded.

In the second game, Thisara Perera had another stormer. After 97 yesterday, he got 68 today to continue Jaffna's very impressive start to the tournament.

Jaffna are first whilst Colombo keep hold of second despite today's loss.

A batsmen friendly today in Sri Lanka.

First off Jaffna continued their unbeaten run to four thanks to Avishka Fernando leading from the front with 84 in a run chase of 171. Winless Galle ran Jaffna closer than they would like but Jaffna edged it with three balls to spare.

Angelo Perera's 67 off 49 balls helped Dambulla chase down 157 against Kandy to pull them up to second place. It was another tight(ish) finish but Dambulla were always in the hunt.

Dinesh Chandimal's second fifty of the tournament put a very definite full stop on Jaffna's great start to the tournament. His 68* saw his Colombo side easily outstrip a 148 target set by the underbaked leaders.

Such has been the dominance of Jaffna that this win sees them still two points clear at the top.

Can't be many times that the bottom placed team in a T20 franchise has the highest scoring batsmen - but such is the case with Galle. Danushka Gunathilaka added another 78 to his tournament total - taking him to 284 - but his side lost for the fifth times in five games. Dambulla set them 208 and despite Gunathilaka's best efforts they fell short by 9 runs. They were in the hunt throughout but it wasn't to be.

In the second game, Kandy were humbled by Colombo's bowlers as they were all out for 105. Wickets were shared around but Qais Ahmad's figures of 4-0-8-2 will be hard to beat in terms of T20 economy.

Colombo hold second while Dambulla move to third.

Despite their batters being their most impressive utility in an unimpressive season, it was Galle's bowlers who got them their inaugural win today; most notably Mohammad 5-26. After limiting Colombo to 171, even Galle couldn't mess it up from there.

Samiullah Shinwari scorched a 20 ball 46* to save Dambulla's blushes and help them qualify for the knock out phase.

Tomorrow's game between Galle and Kandy is now a must win for the pair.

Laurie Evans produced the highest score of the tournament as the two strongest overall sides faced off against each other. Evans got 108 which made up 62% of Colombo's total. Jaffna ran them close but did not manage to reach the total.

In the evening game Galle beat Khulna to progress to the knockouts - which suggests that the talent at the bottom isn't great. If a team can only win twice and still progress it makes a bit of a mockery of the whole thing.

Angelo Perera's 51 ball 74* was not enough for Dambulla as they were defeated by Colombo today. 203 is usually a strong enough total but in this big hitting/small boundaried tournament Colombo were able to get there with an over to spare.

If Daniel Bell-Drummond thought that a spell in this Tier C T20 competition might see him become a prospect on the circuit, his wishes have not come true.

Up until tonight he had scored 81 at an average of 20.25. That is now a slightly more flattering 151 at 30.2 as he scored 70 off 53 for Colombo. It was not enough though as Galle overturned their total of 150 thanks to a clutch performance from their lower order batsmen.

Humble pie for me tonight as I called Galle the worst franchise in T20 history - and they now make the final. However my point stands that this was just their third win in the competition.

Decent overall tournament. Needs some ironing out format wise. In my Tier C oftournaments alongside CPL and PSL

Season Two of this began today with an unlikely hero from the first match.

Samiti Patel scored 42 and got 3 wickets as Galle beat inaugural winners Jaffna by a huge margin.

After setting the standard with a total of 164, Galle then got Jaffna out for 110. It looked even duller for the newly named Jaffna Kings who were at one point 75-7
