Zimbabwe Domestic Twenty20 Competition

Postby The Professor » Sun Apr 11, 2021 6:56 pm

Fresh off the back of the Logan Cup, this competition started today - all broadcast live on YouTube.

Watched the Rocks beat the Logan Cup champions the Rhinos - mainly down to a burst of runs from Tadiwanashe Marumani who got 60 off 20 to help boost them on their way to 159. They got there within 17 overs.

Matabeleland and Mashonaland were also victorious in their opening matches.

Mashonaland's Regis Chakabva leads the embryonic run scoring with 66. The Tuskers' Milton Shumba 5-18 sees him lead the way with the wickets.

Another two fixtures in this competition today.

The Rocks made it 2 from 2 as they beat Matabeleland - again it was Marumani who stood out with another half century as the Rocks hauled in the total of 141 in the 16th over.

The Mountaineers got their first victory against winless Rhinos. Donald Tiripano stood out as he backed up a score of 20 in the total of 144 and then got 4-13 in 3.2 overs.

Marumani leads the wicket-taking with Milton Shumba's six for Matabeleland still giving him the edge.

Can't be many times a player has scored 140 in T20 cricket and ended on the losing side but such was the indignity suffered by Brendan Taylor today. His Rhinos side scored the highest score in the tournament as Taylor ploughed a lone furrow and lifted his side to 194-1. Gallingly Mashonaland only needed 16 overs to overhaul that.

In the second game Gary Chirimuuta's half century proved instrumental in getting Mountaineers total to 175-3 - a total that the table-topping Rocks should have been able to reach however they lost their captain to injury and fell short by some distance. It opens the competition up a little though as Mashonaland, the Mountaineers and the Rocks are all tied on the same points.

Brendan Taylor, quite obviously, has taken on the mantle of highest run scorer. Milton Shumba didn't play today but still remains the strongest bowler - however has to rely on his average as two other bowlers join him with six.

This morning’s game between Mashonaland and the Rocks pitched the two top teams against each other so it was always going to be a thriller. Chamu Chibhabha set the early pace for Mashonaland with 73 off 60 balls as he got his side to 163. The Rocks looked good value to overtake that but fell away in the middle overs. Needing just two runs off the last over they instead got just one and lost three batsmen. In the super over they managed just 6 which Mashonaland rattled off in three balls.

After that breath-taking finale Matabeleland’s victory over the Mountaineers seemed rather anodyne. Craig Ervine was, by some distance, the star of the show with 120 off just 54 balls as Matabeleland reached the highest score of the competition so far. The Mountaineers went big in response…..bit ended small. It looked like they were going to be out for a ridiculously small amount of runs but changed approach to avoid being all out. They ended 63 runs behind.

Two of the stand out performers from across the competition top the run scoring and wicket taking. Marumani got his third half century in four innings for the Rocks today and is 15 runs clear on 177. Donald Tiripano has been continually consistent for the Mountaineers. He got another two today and sits atop the wicket taking column with 8 scalps.

The Rhinos had it handed to them again today as they, again, allowed a team to score the highest score in the competition.

Opener and captain Brian Chari led from the front for Matabeleland as his 46 ball 89 helped drag his side to 215 in the twenty overs. Rhinos never looked likely to get to that eventually losing by 78 runs in the sixteenth over.

In the same fixture, Brendan Taylor got 43 to regain the title of the highest run scorer with 205 in 4 games. Donald Tiripano was not bothered at the top of the wicket-taking column on his off day.

This competition came to an end today with the Mountaineers playing the Rocks in the third place play off before the final between Mashonaland and Matabeleland.

The morning game proved to be the more entertaining of the two as the strong bowling of the Mountaineers could not overcome the strong batting of the Rocks. The Mountaineers boast a number of Zimbabwe internationals and Tendai Chatara's 3-17 was the highlight today - however they could not halt the Rocks charge to 160.

The final was an altogether more one sided affair as Matabeleland proved far too strong for Mashonaland. After putting on 179-6, Matabeleland got Mashonaland all out for 110. Ainsley Ndlovu was the star with 5-20.

Matabeleland's Craig Ervine ended top run scorer with 250 whilst Donald Tiripano ended the competition with 11 wickets for the Mountaineers.

The Mid West Rhinos have started this competion at a gallop with a 6 wicket win against Matabeleland yesterday and a 5 wicket win against the Southern Rocks today.

Nobody has been able to string together two good performances with bat nor ball. Milton Shumba got 67* in their loss to the Rhinos yesterday but only managed 7 yesterday whilst Mashonaland's Brad Evans got a fivefer today but went wicketless yesterday.

Tomorrow is an off day, with games resuming on Sunday.
