its a genre i read alot of as well, read most of the le Carre novels, as well as Ludlum

quite surprised with how popular the Bourne movies were that they haven't looked at any of the other Ludlum books for movies, only one i can think of was the terrible Osterman Weekend

wasn't NbNW my second choice? (you can't expect me to remember...)

Prefer The 39 Steps to North by Northwest, the latter being an unofficial remake of the former.

The Holcroft Covenant apparently, which is also supposed to be terrible.

I prefer 32 Footsteps, by They Might Be Giants. A complete original.

Did Buchan get any credit on NbNW, or was it THAT unofficial?

There wasn't much Buchan in The 39 Steps. But no.

And then Eagle Eye with Shia LaBeouf was an unofficial remake of North by Northwest, and not as good again.

Some films are so quintessential to the genre that they are continually remade, even by accident. Like It Happened One Night for romcoms and Double Indemnity for film noir. IHON is the same film as The Sure Thing, Notting Hill, Roman Holiday, Pretty Woman... yet it's quite possible no one even intended to remake the Capra film.

What was the first war film about a group of wet behind the ears recruits turned into soldiers under the pressure of war by a charismatic leader and sent into battle to sink or swim? The Dawn Patrol? That film must have been made 100 times.
