Ian I see you've given me Westley from second preference list but Newton of Northants was higher on that list. I assume because I had 50k you chose a 50k player but I prefer Newton even though he is a 30k player.

You have both of these

Missed on Cosgrove, Coetzer and Panesar to higher bids.

Sorry ian but there are two Newtons, one from Middlesex the other from Northants which I would like instead of Westley.

Can't see one on my spreadsheet but will have a check.

There aren't two Newtons, for some strange reason I typed Newton instead on Simpson of Middlesex. So I'll stick with the players you listed but if you look at my bids I only bid 30k for the Northants Newton, which means I have 20k left of my Budget. Mind you I have 30 players so it's no use to me.

I think I have plenty of solid scorers for the whole season, without having many stars who can win matches on their own.

a) and b) are partly why there should be preferences - people can choose whether to take a punt on an Eng player being available - but seems unfair to dump them with an Eng player who will likely never play without them having a choice. Same goes for overseas players who will likely hardly play the 4 day games.

on c) if people don't send a preference then when it is their turn they should just get the highest player left on your list - same as when the preferences run out. Seems fair as they have the option to submit preferences. It's not too hard to go down that list of 100 odd players that are left and choose the ones that you would want.

I may not be very popular when I give my opinion on the game but here goes.

The idea of having a lottery skews the whole idea of the auctions. Some managers spend all their budget on high priced players and end up with a squad of well under 30 players knowing that the squad will be topped up for free. this encourages managers to bid most of their budget on high value players which they couldn't do if the 30 player squad had to be paid for at auction.
If there is to be a top up by lottery it should be limited to 2-4 players.
I appreciate that it's too late to change this now but I hope in future it will be changed.

Having thought about this overnight I am going to run the lottery along the same lines as last year.

Some managers have massively overspent on getting their key targets and will thus have to accept their back up players might not score very well for them, whilst others have spent modestly creating a full squad and might have gone for more expensive players if they knew there was a possibility of a preference system being used in the lottery.

However, I will run an additional transfer window between match weeks 1 & 2 so that managers can change up to 5 of their team, an opportunity to dispense with those that will probably not feature much over the CC summer.

this is the point of the preference idea. Those that have spent most money per player are worse off because others get priority and get to choose their preferences.

Actually, perhaps the simplest (and overall fairest) way to do it would be that those posters with least player slots to fill get priority (as a pretty good proxy for the amount of money - would save a lot of calculations). That way if you only have 2 players left to get, and someone else has 15 - then you get priority on your pick for the first 2 rounds of the lottery until you have your full 30 - seems fair because someone who only has 15 players will have taken the risk of having only a few high value players so should not also get priority in the lottery picks.

The problem with the random lottery is that it's quite possible that the people that have taken a punt on high value players already also end up with some of the best possible picks from the lottery and those that

but without the preference system those posters may do very well based on the random luck of the old system.

I propose the following.....

1. In order of budget amount left, players with any money left can pay value for any remaining players, with the person with the highest budget having preference, no tie breakers, they get the player if duplicated. This is because they spent the least money, so probably neither have a bigger squad or abused their budget simply to buy all the talent.

2. Once all budgets are gone, its a blind lottery. The people who played the long game were advantaged by having an extra round, that makes up for the fact that smaller teams with high value per player teams had one less round and less pick of the dregs.


This will mean, in essence, that everyone should either have a mean first squad but little depth, a well balanced team, or really good depth and little start quality... Either way, its then a more balanced competition?
